809session is 809's educational programme, developed and produced in partnership with Expanded Contemporary Dance (ECD) at the Academy of Theatre and Dance (ATD), Amsterdam. It runs throughout the academic year and is 809's primary research site for the question of how culturally grounded practices enter institutional contexts, and under what conditions they can do so without loss of epistemological integrity.
Street and club style cultures carry histories, values, and collective identities. They are knowledge systems with their own pedagogical models, transmission practices, and community structures. When these enter academic contexts, the institution receives something real. 809session researches what it means for that exchange to flow both ways; for the culture to enter with its knowledge systems intact and for the institution to give back in proportion to what it receives.
This project does not propose a solution to this tension but a path explored together with ECD, with the communities it centres, and with the students navigating that intersection. Each edition is a step further into understanding what an honest, reciprocal exchange between culture and institution actually requires.
The model being developed through this partnership is designed to extend beyond its founding context. What 809session is building with ECD is a methodology applicable to any institution navigating the same tensions - a transferable framework for how academic environments can engage with culturally grounded practices with integrity and reciprocity.
